Greetings Friends

There is so much to talk about in this newsletter it’s hard to know where to begin!

Madiba always tops any list so we are happy – no, thrilled! – to report that our 89th birthday gift to Madiba (a Mozambican lifescene commissioned by the shop from Samuel Baloyi and depicting the first democratic cabinet) so impressed the global icon that he requested a meeting.

And so it was that Samuel Baloyi and our very own Greg Moran and Themba Mhlongo found themselves sitting in Nelson Mandela’s study in October, having fun identifying which members of that historic cabinet were seated where. Madiba expressed his genuine appreciation to Samuel, whose masterful ability in the skilikadane style was already well-known by Graca Machel – who, by the way, has now taken to shopping for gifts at The African Toyshop!

The meeting was memorable and breathed life into our vision of impacting directly and meaningfully on the lives of individual toymakers around Africa – not to mention bringing joy into people’s lives, as Madiba’s
delight in his gift (and the HIV/AIDS march scene that Samuel created to mark the day) testified to.

In other news … we are now fast-tracking
our product lines and development. Many
of you may know that we are about to stock
an exclusive range of 36 ‘master toys’ from the
hand of avant-garde rapper, Max Normal.TV,
Two of each of these most amazing toys will be
handmade by Max Normal himself and
will be truly collectible.

In honour of the occasion, we will be holding an official unveiling on

23 November from 6:30 pm
at 44 Stanley Avenue

which will also include the launch of the brilliant kiddies (and big people’s) book,‘Max Normal Likes Animals’. Plans for next year include a new range of toys from MaxNormal.TV to be produced by one of our local toy-making co-operatives.

We also now stock and adorable new knitted range from a women’s cooperative in Kenya.

The range includes Christmas stockings and wonderful animals and dolls - all of which make perfect presents. Tintin afficianados will also be happy to know that we have new collectables in both our stores – and that’s just the start of our current stock!

And in closing …

Samuel Baloyi (he of Nelson Mandela fame) has crafted a truly special soccer skilikadane scene which is currently on display at our 44 Stanley Avenue shop.

The making of this spectacular work of art forms part of a documentary that is being made for e-TV on Samuel and the African Toyshop, which will be screened
mid-2008.

If you are in the area, do pop in to see this real masterpiece for yourself!

Yours in Fair Trade
